Aren’t we alive to begin with and isn’t much what we mean by that expression quite opposed to a life truly lived?).

Benches: Yes, I too have found being seated next to strangers in public spaces a varied past time with much scope in potential.
A recent memory includes a bench in an old medieval town atop a hill in the Dordogne, France. I sat down to enjoy the view whilst eating my frugal lunch of avocado and some carrots (this alone enough to draw puzzled gazes).
Now, being an Australian with strong English ties, Austrian ancestry and living in Germany, all of which providing accent-free bilinguality, I am not overly fond of meeting Germans when travelling. I try not too biased there but I get enough of them in my everyday, thank you very much.
So, after settling on the only available spot that the three benches there provided, I was a bit annoyed finding myself seated next to two Germans. But, oh, what conversation they held!
An older and a younger man, the prior seeming to have some teaching background, they conversed on the Napoleonic wars, how Blücher came to the aid, how this influenced German Sturm und Drang and the Romantic Movement, all complete with references to Goethe, dates and suchlike. Although that older teacher was something of a smart ass know-it-all, it was quite interesting to listen to and certainly a surprise, especially as they were clad in heavy motorcycle black leather (gee, and it was nigh 35°C that day!).

What led me, as I listened, to reflect on stereotypes as indeed I often do, perhaps due to my very mixed background (it is even more mixed than described above). Prejudice can prevent so much potential and yet for all self-analysis and reflection I find myself not free from it. Did I live in Germany for too long (quite a judgemental and prejudiced people in some, not all, parts) or is it something inherent in human or even tribe/pack nature found in some other species’ communities as well? I tend to lean towards the latter, so better be aware and open to be surprised.

Oh, and another “bench” comes to mind: What about virtual benches, lounges? What with the follow-up real meetings I happened to meet some very nice people and, since you asked, Rob, yes, my Love.

But my favourite bench is a rocky shore, looking out to the sea. There I can be alone although I prefer a silent sharing of intangible impression.

Thank you for inspiring me.
NaiadAnglorum

Sorry you lost some of your comment.I must admit, ...

Sorry you lost some of your comment.

I must admit, I copy my comments to a text processor on my desktop in case Blogger messes up.

As far as I know, there is no limit to comment size.

Benches are great places to meet people.
